Some Magical Ideas…
There’s nothing more magical and spellbinding than a wizards party (inspired by the one and only Harry Potter)!
If you want to take all the legwork and hassle out of planning the party, there are plenty of companies that offer a complete service to throw your child a Harry Potter inspired party, while you sit back and enjoy. However, if you are keen to muck in and get your hands dirty, then I have heaps of ideas on how you can throw a magical wizardy party!
Party Invitations
These could come from the magical wizards school, inviting the children to join them, or how about in the shape of an owl? Alternatively they could be in the form of a school report or perhaps the children could be summoned to the headmasters office?
Magic Wands
The party wouldn’t be complete without magic wands to cast some spells. You can of course buy some off the shelf and Etsy have some really great ones (I have even seen some on sale at Lidl!), however, you can easily and cheaply make some authentic looking wands with some sticks from the garden (or disposable chopsticks), a hot glue gun, some paint and embellishments, such as beads and sequins. Once you have collected some suitable sticks, you use the hot glue gun to make patterns and nobbles on the sticks and then once dry, all you need to do is paint and decorate them, it’s as easy as that! You could even get the children to help collect the sticks and paint them in a colour of their choice as the party activity (I suggest you remain in charge of the glue gun). The wands would make a great addition to the kids party bags too.
Decorations
‘Broomsticks, cobwebs, bats and an owl,
Everything that’s sure to make you howl,
Lotions, potions and magic spells,
Spooky noises and tinkling bells.’
Fake flame tea lights and Halloween decorations would also lend themselves really well, Hobbycraft usually have a great selection.
Food Ideas
- Chocolate mice or frogs (eg Cadbury’s Freddos). Matchmakers or straight pretzels for wands.
- Jelly beans.
- Effervescent coke floats (can also be made with lemonade or ginger beer too)
- A cauldron full of crisps or popcorn.
- Sand-witches
- Edible shimmer to add to drinks and cakes
- Rock cakes
- Mini eggs (dragon eggs)
- Popping candy
- Lemon sherbets
Costumes
There are lots of places to buy specific costumes or you could easily adapt a halloween witches costume and an old school uniform. You can find some lovely costumes suppliers in my blog Where to Buy Fancy Dress Costumes for Children.

Games and Activities
Each of the activities could be a ‘class’ as a part of the wizards school time table. Then you could choose a few of the ideas below:
Team games: The children could be assigned to a ‘school house’ each, or an animal, or colour, or mystical character, which would be their team name. You can find lots of ideas for team games that you can theme on my blog Outdoor Party Games for Children.
Traditional party games: I have lots of ideas for these on my blog Children’s Party Games – Oldies but Goodies, which you could theme, so that they all have magical names, such as ‘pin the wand on the wizard’, or ‘what’s the time Mr Wizard’ etc.
Slime: You could host a trainee wizards class in making slime. There are lots of really easy recipes online that involve simple ingredients such as PVA glue and liquid detergent. Then all you need to do is add some food colouring and either some glitter or perhaps something a little more spooky…
Jelly bean taste challenge: ‘all the flavours’, even the gross ones and the kids have to guess the flavour.
Broom training: you might need a lot of broom handles for this one, or perhaps some lengths of pvc pipe from a DIY store.
Wands: make your own wand class.
Magic potions: This can be a fun and pretty safe activity, even for little ones. The chance to make a magic potion, with lots of bright coloured fruit juices and food colouring, which the kids can mix and match as they wish. For slightly older children, you could even add some jelly eyeballs (or peeled grapes) or jelly worms to float in the potions. Alternatively you could get the kids to mix vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and washing up liquid – this will froth up and overflow, so make sure you are prepared for the mess!
Spell books: Alongside a magic wand, every good wizard will need a book of spells. The kids could decorate a blank notebook each, to turn it into a book of spells. Perhaps they could then be tasked with writing their own spell.
