Birthday Traditions for Children

As Much for The Parents as the Birthday Child!

Birthday traditions can be such fun and they needn’t be big and expensive. However, they can be something very meaningful and a lovely way to create memories with your family.  They might even provide a great photo opportunity, so you can look back on the photos in years to come.

In our family, we tend to open our birthday presents as soon as we wake up, before we’ve even left the bed!  We also have a birthday book for our daughter Lily, which we fill out each year, so we have a lovely record of her as she grows.   We also have a family meal with my mum/granny, although not always on the actual day, but close enough.

If you have some family birthday traditions, I’d love to hear about them!

Kids bedroom with birthday decorations

Decorate your child’s bedroom while they are sleeping.

Pile of presents at the end of the bed

Sneak in and leave presents at the foot of your child’s bed.

Kids eating pizza

Have a family day or meal out.

Pile of letters

Write your child a letter on their birthday each year, for them to keep for years to come.

Birthday book

Start a Birthday book with key milestones and photos.

Pile of pancakes

Make a special birthday breakfast, like a tower of pancakes.

Happy girl with arms in the air

If you’re a risk taker; give your child a ‘yes’ day.

Map of a scavenger hunt

Plan a scavenger hunt that leads to their birthday present.

A hamburger

Let the birthday child choose their own meals all day.

A selection of old toys

Ask your child to donate a toy to charity, to make space for the new birthday gifts.

Coloured post it notes

Hide little surprise messages around their house and in their school lunch box (if they have school on their birthday).

Pile of presents

Gift something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read.

Genie lamp

Grant the birthday child three wishes for the day.

Postage stamp

Post their birthday card – it’s always fun receiving post.

Family playing board game

Host a Family games night.

Whether you let your child be queen for the day or eat their body weight in chocolate, as long as you are creating memories and having fun, that’s what matters.
